Mayor Villaraigosa Rolls Out a Day of Service
on Big Sunday Weekend

As part of Big Sunday weekend, the City of Los Angeles will host a “Mayor’s Day of Service” in the West Valley.

Some 50 Mayor’s Day projects, with an expected 3,000 volunteers, will take place from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 3, mostly in Chatsworth, Canoga Park, Winnetka and West Hills.

Among the many undertakings slated for that day, in conjunction with Big Sunday, are improvement and beautification projects at public schools, tree planting (as part of the mayor’s Million Trees Initiative), workshops for high-risk youth, art projects, garage sales, donation collections and street cleaning. All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt.

“This is one of seven days of service scheduled this year,” said Tessa Charnofsky, West Valley Area Director for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “The mayor believes it’s important to promote volunteerism and civic engagement. He wants to encourage people to play a role in improving their city.”

The closing ceremony will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the Chatsworth Train Depot, 10038 Old Depot Plaza Road, Chatsworth, 91311. There will be entertainment, lunch, and booths set up by a variety of nonprofits.

“We are thrilled that Mayor Villaraigosa is having a Day of Service as part of Big Sunday,” said David Levinson, executive director of Big Sunday. “The mayor has been a great supporter. More than that, he shares our vision for community service and community building.”
