BIG SUNDAY Connects Volunteers with Holiday Needs

Big Sunday’s 2007 Holiday Volunteering and Giving Opportunity List is now available, with more than 60 organizations seeking assistance.

The list details what these nonprofits, schools and other groups need in terms of donations, supplies and people power from early November through Jan. 1, 2008.

“Big Sunday has been compiling a ‘wish list’ from nonprofits and other agencies for the past five years and distributing it to our army of volunteers,” said Sherry Marks, associate director of Big Sunday. “This year’s list is our biggest ever, a testament to the tremendous need in our community as well as a tribute to all our volunteers who are so eager to find a way to give back during the holiday season.”

Opportunities include buying Christmas presents for children, teenagers and adults, as well as feeding the hungry at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Volunteers can take a group of family and friends to sing songs at a nursing home during Hanukkah or organize their office or school to assemble holiday gift baskets for needy families.

They can also help prepare care packages for soldiers overseas; donate much-needed dry and canned goods to local food pantries facing dire shortages; or help collect toiletries, blankets, clothing, school and art supplies.

The truth is — just like on Big Sunday — there’s something for everyone. Whether you have a little time or a lot, whether you’re single or have a family, whether you’re part of an office, a school, a church or a synagogue, there are plenty of projects big and small for you to choose from.
