GREEN SUNDAY Begins Planting Roots

In an effort to be good stewards of the earth (not to mention meeting the demands of thousands of our volunteers) Big Sunday has announced that at least 50 of its projects for 2008 will be focused on helping the environment.

It’s a huge and exciting series of events that we’re calling — what else? — Green Sunday.

All Green Sunday events will take place concurrently with all the other projects on Big Sunday weekend, May 3-4.

This formal effort grows out of a longstanding commitment to the environment. Since we began in 1999, we’ve sent out thousands of volunteers to clean beaches and rivers, clear brush, garden, rake, hoe, reforest, re-soil and lay sod. And, if that weren’t enough, we’ve planted acres of flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetable gardens, too.

Over the years, Big Sunday has worked with an array of environmental groups, including TreePeople, North East Trees, Heal the Bay, the Surfrider Foundation, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Friends of the Los Angeles River, Tree Musketeers, the California Native Plant Society, Whittier Narrows Nature Center, Eaton Canyon Nature Center and many, many others. Of course, we’ll continue to partner with many of these wonderful organizations, plus some new ones, as well.

There will be places to recycle, places to e-cycle and places to learn how you can help the environment. We’re especially excited to have Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Million Trees Initiative be a big part of Green Sunday.

For more information about Green Sunday — or to run a Green Sunday project (we need you!) — contact Dave Cooper at dcooper@bigsunday.org. To volunteer, click on Project Sign-Up starting April 1, when all Big Sunday projects will be posted. You’ll find things to do for all ages, in all parts of town. Finally, to be a Green Sunday sponsor (yep, you can do that, too), please contact our development director, Tracy Austin, at tracy@bigsunday.org.

What are you planting on Green Sunday?
