Holiday Projects

Every fall Big Sunday distributes a Holiday Volunteering and Giving Opportunity List to its army of volunteers. The list details what our participating nonprofits, schools and other groups need in terms of donations, supplies and people power from early November through Jan.1.

Big Sunday began compiling a holiday “wish list” from our nonprofits and other agencies about five years ago, both because of the tremendous need in our community and because our volunteers were eager to find ways to give back during the holiday season. We play the role of matchmaker.

Last year our volunteers helped more than 60 organizations seeking assistance. Opportunities include buying Christmas presents for needy children, teenagers and adults, as well as feeding the hungry at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Volunteers can take a group of family and friends to sing songs at a nursing home during Hanukkah or organize their office or school to assemble holiday gift baskets for poor families.

They can also help prepare care packages for soldiers overseas; donate much-needed dry and canned goods to local food pantries facing dire shortages; or help collect toiletries, blankets, clothing, school and art supplies.

The truth is — just like on Big Sunday — there’s something for everyone. Whether you have a little time or a lot, whether you’re single or have a family, whether you’re part of an office, a school, a church or a synagogue, there are plenty of projects big and small for you to choose from.
